Plan your load to save space and money

Not planning out how to load the dumpster is a common mistake. What should go in first? How can I safely throw away these bulky pieces of furniture? When is the dumpster full? All valid questions and can be answered he quickly:

  1. Always consider safety first. When loading your dumpster, it’s important to place heavier objects and materials in first to avoid any settling of the load. If bulky or heavy objects have the opportunity to slide they could seriously injure anyone working in or near the dumpster.
  2. Saving space could eliminate the need for a second dumpster and save money. Break down large items like dressers, tables, and chairs so that they will take up less space. Neatly stacking trash lumber or siding instead of tossing it in the top will help make sure you’re getting the most value out of your dumpster rental.
  3. Never overfill the dumpster. Debris should not be loaded higher than the top edge of the dumpster. Overloading or overfilling a dumpster can easily lead to injuries from blows to the head and face. We always cover our loads during transport, but objects that are over the top edge of the dumpster could come loose and strike a person or vehicle in the road.

Weight is key

The primary costs in disposing of any type of trash are transportation and dump fees. Transportation is a flat rate included in your dumpster rental. Dump fees are charged by the ton, so heavier loads will be more expensive. It is helpful to separate and recycle any particularly heavy materials like concrete or steel. All our dumpster rental options include a tonnage amount that is covered by the regular price of the dumpster.

Our 10 day rental options:

15-yard dumpster will include 1 ton of material disposal for $350.

20-yard dumpster will include 2 tons of material disposal for $450.

30-yard dumpster will include 3 tons of material disposal for $499.

Try to estimate your material

It is helpful to estimate the weight of the materials you will be disposing of to understand the total costs of your project. If you are disposing of a lot of similar types of material you can calculate your total approximate weight like this example:

A homeowner or residential contractor has about 1,000 square feet of drywall to remove and dispose of. Residential drywall weighs just under 2 lbs. per square foot. This means there is a total of approximately 2,000 lbs. (or 1 ton) of material. Knowing that, we could assume that a 15-yard dumpster would meet their needs.

Debris for an asphalt shingle roof replacement job would produce approx. 2 lbs. per square foot, per layer. A 1,000 square foot single layer roof replacement would produce aprox. 1 ton of material and could also be done with one 15-yard dumpster.

Information on weights of common building materials can be found here

This example calculation of weight could be used for pretty much any construction debris you need to dispose of. Remember to be as accurate as possible when estimating the thickness of building materials so that your weight per square foot or cubic foot is correct.

Bonus tip

Try to sell, donate, or recycle as much as you can before ordering your dumpster. You can save a ton on disposal and even make some cash to help offset the cost of your clean out project. You would be surprised what you can sell on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist with a small amount of effort. You can get substantially more money if you clean the items, take quality photos, and put a little bit of creativity into describing the item.
